Detox Level 1: Taking a break
Maybe your computer screen keeps calling your name. Or maybe the constant ding of your phone is driving you inane. Sometimes all you need is to shut your phone off for a few hours, hide it in a drawer, or just put it on airplane mode for a little while. Try to resist turning on the television or getting on your iPad and just relax. Read a book (for some ideas on new titles click here), take a bath, walk the dog. Those snapchats and emails will be there when you get back!
Detox Level 2: Taking the day
If you really need to get away from your technology, you might want to take a day to relax and enjoy what nature has to offer. Go out and fish, hike, or even go to a nearby park and have a picnic. Anything that will distract you from your usual routine will do the trick. Bring your phone along with you (in case of emergency) but at the very least turn the ringer and all alert tones off. Bring a camera along to avoid taking your phone out to take cool pics (doesn’t have to be fancy, a disposable one will do).
Detox Level 3: Getting away
Don’t be afraid to get away for real. You don’t have to go on a full blown vacation. Take a weekend and go camping, stay at a cabin (or treehouse), ANYTHING to physically remove you from all of the stress your tech devices give you. And you don’t have to be alone to detox! Invite your significant other, your friends, or family! Have everyone put their phones away and enjoy each other’s company. And if you’re really concerned with being out of reach for a couple days, shoot your boss or anyone you might think needs to contact you and let them know you’ll be MIA but you’ll get back to them on Monday.
